Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the treatment of improper bites and crooked teeth. Orthodontic treatment can help straighten a patient’s teeth and place them in the correct place. We usually use braces and clear aligners to position the patient’s teeth. Instead of focusing on just the teeth in orthodontic treatment, we work to reconstruct the entire face.
After an active orthodontic treatment process, patients usually wear retainers (orthodontic devices) that help keep the teeth in their improved positions while reshaping the bone around them. Retainers are usually worn full-time for a period of days to a year, then part-time (usually at night while sleeping) for the length of time recommended by the orthodontist. It is possible for teeth to remain aligned without regular retainers. However, there are many reasons why teeth can become crowded as a person ages, whether or not they have had orthodontic treatment before; therefore, there is no guarantee that teeth will remain aligned without retainers. For this reason, many orthodontists recommend wearing night or part-time retainers for many years (possibly for life) after orthodontic treatment. Adult orthodontic patients are more likely to need retainers for life.
